The best blinds for privacy - an honest guide from someone who's been in a lot of Waikato homes.

Privacy is one of the most common things people talk to us about when we arrive for a measure and quote.
Privacy is one of the most common things people talk to us about when we arrive for a measure and quote. And it makes sense - your home should feel like yours. Not like a fishbowl.
The good news is there are more options than most people realise. The not-so-good news is that the wrong choice can leave you with a beautiful blind that still lets the neighbours see everything. So here's an honest breakdown of every option - what works, what doesn't, and what we'd actually recommend depending on your situation.
First - understanding the difference between privacy and blockout
This is where a lot of people get confused, and it's worth clearing up before anything else.
Privacy means people outside can't see in. Blockout means light can't get through the fabric at all. These are two different things - and you don't always need both.
A sunscreen roller blind, for example, gives you excellent daytime privacy while still letting light filter through. While it's main purpose is privacy it can also be great if that window gets direct harsh sunlight. From the outside, all anyone sees is the fabric - your lounge, your life, stays yours. But at night when your lights are on inside, the dynamic reverses and sunscreen blinds offer very little privacy at all.
Understanding this distinction is the difference between choosing the right blind and choosing the wrong one.
The best blind options for privacy - room by room
Roller blinds — the most versatile and cost-effective privacy option
Roller blinds are our most popular recommendation for privacy and it's easy to see why. The range of fabrics available means you can fine-tune exactly how much - or how little - you want the outside world involved in your life.
Sunscreen fabrics (2% to 5% to 10% openness factor) give you excellent daytime privacy while keeping your view and letting natural light in. The lower the openness percentage, the more private.
Blockout roller blinds give you complete privacy at any time of day or night. No light in, no visibility out. Perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, and any room where you want total control.
The dual roller blind — the best of both worlds
This is one of our favourite solutions and one that can sometimes surprise people when we show them the option.
A dual roller blind sits on a single bracket system and gives you two separate blinds in one - a sunscreen or translucent fabric for daytime and a blockout fabric that rolls down over the top for nighttime. During the day you get filtered light and full daytime privacy. At night, drop the blockout blind over it and the room is completely yours - no light in, no visibility out.
It's an elegant solution that removes the need to choose between privacy and light. And because both blinds are on the same dual system, it looks seamless and intentional rather than like two separate things stuck to your window.
For living areas especially - where your needs change dramatically between morning light and evening privacy - a dual roller blind is often the most practical and most satisfying option we offer.
Our honest recommendation: for living areas, a dual roller with a 10% sunscreen under a blockout gives you complete flexibility at any time of day. For bedrooms where you simply want it dark, a single blockout roller is all you need.
Venetian blinds - the most adjustable privacy option
Venetian blinds - timber or aluminium - give you more real-time control over privacy than any other blind type. Tilt the slats down and you have complete privacy. Angle them upward and you get light in from above while keeping the view from the street out. Open them fully and the window is clear.
For kitchens, bathrooms, and offices where your privacy needs change throughout the day, venetian blinds are genuinely hard to beat. You can adjust them without moving from where you're sitting - which sounds small but makes a real difference in daily life.
PVC venetians are also more moisture resistant making them the most practical choice for bathrooms and laundries.
Curtains - the classic privacy solution
There's a reason people have been using curtains for centuries. A well-hung, well-lined pair of curtains gives you complete privacy, excellent insulation, and a softness that no blind can quite replicate.
For rooms where privacy is non-negotiable - bedrooms especially - curtains with a blackout or blockout lining are hard to beat. They hang to the floor, they cover the full window, and when they're closed the room is yours completely.
The thing most people don't realise is that the lining matters as much as the fabric. A sheer fabric with no lining offers almost no privacy at all. The same fabric with a blockout lining behind it transforms completely.
Roman blinds and Honeycomb blinds
We want to be upfront about this one - roman blinds and honeycomb blinds are both beautiful products and we love installing them. But if privacy is your primary concern, they're not the first thing we'd suggest.
Both options work on a simple up-or-down mechanism - they're either raised or lowered. When fully lowered they do cover your window completely, which gives you privacy. But unlike roller blinds or venetians, you can't adjust them to filter light while maintaining privacy at the same time. It's all or nothing.
Roman blinds in particular are often chosen for their beautiful fabric and soft, tailored look - and they deliver on both. But if you want to enjoy natural light in your room while keeping the neighbours out, a roman blind doesn't give you that flexibility. You'd need to pair it with a sheer curtain or a sunscreen roller blind underneath to achieve both.
Honeycomb blinds are in a similar position - exceptional for insulation and a clean modern look, but not a standalone privacy solution if you want light and privacy simultaneously.
If privacy is what's driving your decision, we'd steer you toward roller blinds, venetians, or a layered curtain solution first. If you love the look of roman or honeycomb blinds and privacy is a secondary consideration, we'd talk through how to layer them with something else to give you the best of both.
This is exactly the kind of conversation we have at every measure and quote - and it's why we'd rather see your home than give you a one-size-fits-all answer.
Outdoor blinds - privacy for your outdoor spaces too
Privacy isn't just about inside your home. If you've got a deck or patio that feels overlooked - by neighbours, the street, or just passing foot traffic - outdoor blinds are the solution most people haven't considered yet.
PVC outdoor blinds give you complete privacy and shelter simultaneously. Mesh options filter light and reduce visibility without closing your space off entirely. Either way, your outdoor area becomes genuinely usable - private, sheltered, and yours.
What we'd recommend - and why we'd rather talk to you first
Here's the truth: the best blind for privacy in your home depends on your specific windows, which direction they face, what time of day you need privacy most, and how you actually live in your space.
A sunscreen roller blind that works perfectly in a north-facing Hamilton lounge might be completely wrong for a south-facing Cambridge bedroom. A venetian blind that's ideal for a kitchen might feel cold and clinical in a dining room.
This is exactly why we offer a free in-home measure and quote - because seeing your home, understanding your light, and talking through how you use each room leads to a much better outcome than any online guide ever could.
We come to you. We bring the samples. We give you an honest recommendation and a clear quote with no obligation.
